Coastal Racing
Beyond our regular club racing program, Tamar Yacht Club hosts and supports a number of iconic coastal racing events that showcase Tasmania's spectacular coastline and rich sailing heritage.
From the historic Ponrabbel Shield and Geoff Hiscock Memorial Pursuit Race to major offshore events such as the Willie Smith's Launceston to Hobart Yacht Race and the Australian Three Peaks Race, these events provide sailors with opportunities to test their skills, challenge themselves in diverse conditions and enjoy the camaraderie that comes with offshore competition.
Whether competing as skipper or crew, coastal racing offers a rewarding blend of seamanship, navigation, strategy and adventure, while connecting sailors from clubs across Tasmania and beyond.
Ponrabbel Shield
The Ponrabbel Shield is one of Northern Tasmania's traditional coastal yacht races and a highlight of the Tamar Yacht Club offshore racing calendar.
Held annually in February, the race starts from Beauty Point and takes competitors across Bass Strait and along Tasmania's North West Coast to the head of the Mersey River in Devonport.
The race provides a rewarding challenge for skippers and crews, testing navigation, seamanship and tactical decision-making in a variety of coastal conditions. Combining competitive racing with stunning coastal scenery, the Ponrabbel Shield continues to attract sailors from across Tasmania.
Geoff Hiscock Memorial Pursuit Race
The Geoff Hiscock Memorial Pursuit Race follows the Ponrabbel Shield and forms the return leg of the weekend's racing program.
Starting in Devonport, competitors sail back to Beauty Point in a pursuit race format, where boats start at staggered times according to their handicap. This format often creates close racing throughout the fleet and a thrilling finish as yachts converge on the Tamar River.
Named in honour of Geoff Hiscock and his contribution to Tasmanian sailing, the race has become a popular event that combines competitive racing with camaraderie and sportsmanship.
Together with the Ponrabbel Shield, the Geoff Hiscock Memorial Pursuit Race offers crews an enjoyable weekend of coastal racing between some of Northern Tasmania's most iconic sailing locations.
