Offshore Racing & Cruising

For sailors seeking adventure beyond the Tamar, Tamar Yacht Club is actively involved in some of Tasmania's most iconic offshore racing events.

Offshore racing and cruising combines seamanship, navigation, teamwork and endurance, challenging crews in a variety of conditions while showcasing some of Australia's most spectacular coastal waters.

Whether competing as skipper or crew, these events provide an opportunity to test skills, build experience and become part of Tasmania's rich offshore sailing tradition.

 Launceston to Hobart Yacht Race

Starting from Beauty Point on 27 December, the Launceston to Hobart Yacht Race has become one of Tasmania's premier offshore sailing events.

The race attracts a strong fleet of Tasmanian and interstate yachts for a challenging and rewarding 285 nautical mile course down Tasmania's east coast to the finish line off Castray Esplanade, Hobart.

Full details about this race can be found on the Derwent Sailing Squadron website.

The Australian Three Peaks Race® is part of Tasmania’s sporting and maritime history and occurs biennally over the Easter weekend. This world renowned event captures everything unique about Tasmania, offshore sailing, endurance, wilderness, regional communities and resilience.

It is a non-stop offshore short-handed sailing and endurance mountain running event, commencing at Beauty Point just north of Launceston in Tasmania situated on the Tamar River and finishing in Hobart on the River Derwent. En-route, the running members of each team have to scale Mt Strzelecki, Mt Freycinet and Mt Wellington.

Each race team of five is generally comprised of three sailors and two specialist runners. Often, one of the sailors in the team doubles as a runner should one be unable to continue.

The race was conducted for 25 years starting on Good Friday each Easter from 1989 until the last race in 2013.

Now run by the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania it is set for a return in 2027.
