Membership at TYC

Since 1837, the Tamar Yacht Club has been home to sailors, power‑boaters, and social members who value community, adventure, and life on the Tamar. As the oldest yacht club in the Southern Hemisphere, TYC offers a unique blend of tradition, experience, and outstanding facilities that only a long‑established club can provide.

People join TYC for many reasons — the thrill of racing, the enjoyment of cruising, the camaraderie of the clubhouse, or simply to connect with others who love being on the water. From dinghies to ocean‑going yachts, experienced sailors and power‑boaters will find plenty of opportunities to skipper, crew, compete, or explore.

For those new to boating, TYC is a welcoming place to learn. We offer pathways for beginners, recognised training opportunities, and a community of knowledgeable members who are always willing to share skills and experience.

And you don’t need to own a boat — or even have sailed before — to become part of the club. Friends, supporters, families, and retired sailors can enjoy the relaxed social atmosphere at both our Launceston and Beauty Point clubhouses.

Become part of a club shaped by history, driven by passion, and strengthened by community.

Why Join TYC?

Joining the Tamar Yacht Club means becoming part of a community with nearly two centuries of history, passion, and connection on the water. Whether you’re an experienced sailor, a power‑boater, or someone discovering boating for the first time, TYC offers opportunities, friendships, and experiences you won’t find anywhere else in Northern Tasmania.

A Club for Every Level of Experience

From seasoned skippers to complete beginners, TYC welcomes members of all backgrounds. You don’t need to own a boat — just an interest in being part of a supportive and active boating community.

Outstanding Facilities in Two Locations

With clubhouses in Launceston and Beauty Point, members enjoy access to exceptional facilities including a modern 100‑berth marina, slip yard, moorings, social spaces, and on‑water services designed to make boating easy and enjoyable.

A Vibrant Social & Sailing Community

Sailing at TYC is as much about people as it is about boats. Our racing program, cruising events, and social gatherings bring members together, creating friendships and memories that last for years.

Learn, Grow & Participate

New to boating? No problem. TYC provides training pathways, crew opportunities, and mentorship from experienced members. For those who’ve sailed all their lives, the club offers competitive racing, volunteer roles, and the chance to share skills with the next generation.

Proud Heritage, Exciting Future

 Families

  • The Tamar Yacht Club has a large fleet of club owned training boats, including Optimist, Sabot, Flying 11's and Pacer class dinghies.

When joining as a family, you have the added benefit of a discounted family membership with the club and interacting with our sailing families.

The Tamar Yacht Club's Small Boat Sailing Squadron conducts a full sailing program and training sessions in a safe, supportive and friendly environment. These sessions are conducted by qualified instructors and overseen by the clubs fleet of race management and rescue boats.

Sailing is that rare sport that brings people together and has a role for everyone, regardless of their age. You can truly sail for life.

The Tamar Yacht Club operates a full sailing calendar, with around two hundred individual race starts each year, from junior beginner's dinghy races to offshore events and Australian Championship Events.

Learning to Sail

  • There are regular sail training sessions, power boat training, navigation, and marine radio operator certificate courses. You will have the opportunity to crew on all sizes of yachts, assist race officials and absorb the boating knowledge that the experienced members possess.

Getting Involved

  • In the sailing season we need rescue and committee boat skippers and crew, as well as assistance in the canteen, bar and at our major events i.e. Neil Buckby Subaru Tamar Valley Multi Sport Classic, Sargissons & Natuzzi Launceston 2 Hobart start and Melbourne 2 Launceston finish.

The social committee is always looking for fresh faces bringing new ideas.

Someone is needed to help with articles for our newsletters and website. We would love to know what you are doing - whether it is cruising the Tamar or the Caribbean or racing at any location between Beauty Point and Britain.

We are also interested in land-based activities - we have heard rumors of skiing rendezvous and car rallys. You do not have to write much and good photos are always appreciated. Copy and images can be emailed or put onto disk and left with the office. Video too! If you have shot any "on water" video that might be suitable for the website please get in touch. We can help with editing if needed.
