Learn to Sail with Tamar Yacht Club
Whether your child wants to try sailing for the first time or build their skills and confidence on the water, Tamar Yacht Club offers a fun, safe and supportive environment for sailors of all ages and abilities.
Our Learn to Sail program runs from October to April and is delivered by qualified instructors and experienced volunteers at our Beauty Point clubhouse.

Our Training Program
Junior training sessions are held most Saturday mornings throughout the sailing season.
Training is available for:
Beginner sailors
Intermediate sailors
More experienced junior sailors
The Club's fleet of Optimist dinghies provides an ideal introduction to sailing for younger children, while our Pacer dinghies are used for older juniors and adult beginners.
For families wanting to try sailing before purchasing a boat, a limited number of Optimists are available for seasonal lease.
Racing Opportunities
As sailors gain competence and confidence, they are encouraged to participate in Saturday afternoon racing.
Racing provides an opportunity to build skills, develop sportsmanship and enjoy friendly competition in a supportive environment.
A weekly "Lucky Boat" prize is awarded to one participating sailor.
Safety on the Water
Safety is our highest priority.
All training is supervised by qualified instructors and supported by Tamar Yacht Club's rescue boat fleet.
Rescue vessels are on the water during both training and racing activities.
Season and Times
Pre-Christmas Season
October to December
Training: 9:30am to approximately 11:30am
Optional racing from 1:15pm
Post-Christmas Season
Early February to Easter / end of Term 1
No sailing is conducted during the March and November long weekends.
Cost
$118 per child per season
Fees are payable after the first three trial sessions.
The fee includes:
Sailing Australia membership and insurance
Use of club boats and equipment
Qualified instruction
Lifejackets and safety equipment
Access to clubhouse facilities
A volunteer-run canteen operates each Saturday, offering meals and snacks at additional cost.
Come and Give It a Try
All you need to bring is:
Suitable clothing or wetsuit
Footwear that can get wet
A warm change of clothes
A positive attitude
We provide the boats, lifejackets and instruction.

Northern Tas Coaching Clinic
3 - 4 October 2026
Kick-start the sailing season with the Northern Tasmania Coaching Clinic, hosted by Tamar Yacht Club and delivered by Australian Sailing coaches.
This two-day clinic provides sailors with an opportunity to:
Refresh skills after the winter break
Improve boat handling and racing techniques
Learn from qualified Australian Sailing coaches
Enjoy two fun days on the water with other young sailors
Limited charter boats are available:
ILCA (2 boats)
Pacer (10 boats)
Optimist (4 boats)
Participants requiring a charter boat should indicate this during registration.
Places are limited, so early registration is recommended.
